Making it Last

And then you will turn up
Heralded by the bell
The steps familiar
Shuffle turning to swell

The tired smile
As you emerge
From the mists of memory
Familiar territory

Was it just yesterday
That we looked away
In our confident smiling
Expectant way

Knowing there would be many a morrow
Where we would share a cuppa we borrow
From the future and our past
Sipping slowly, making it last

Till the whirlwind picks us up again
Flailing gracefully, legerdemain
We soar in our own cloudswell
Charting as only we foretell

When the roar has come to rest
We know the day’s true bequest
Is to lie in each others vocable
Weaving chains allegorical

Meaningless mundane chatter
Lulling us to familiar comfort
Amaranthine murmurs beyond matter
Meaning sans purport
