Embers

It was good while it lasted
And it’s fine when it is gone
The elation of being besotted
The calm of having moved on

The embers in the ash
Tell tales of fires steady
Of flares that reached the sky
Of sparks ever to the ready

Raking them now and again
A sudden sizzle rising high
A glow of comfortable confidence
That another flame is nigh

(Gathering our tinder we chance again
Burning in flames tender, our vows we renew
From embers we come and to embers we go
Casting ourselves into forms that glow)

(When the flame subsides, it is time to sink
Into comfortable habits of whittling the ring
It is time to withdraw into cozy caves
Free of the call, no longer unbidden slaves)
