Duel

Could you not wait for me
When you walked steadily away
Could you not turn and look
To see my heart melt and splay

Could you not hear the crack
Of hope that had come to stay
Or did you not care to know
Of the diffluent disarray?

Here we were, called to duel
The seconds they came to stand
As naturally as we had sung our duet
So elegantly did we disband

Even as back to back we stepped
Away and yet within range
Cold and bare the morn windswept
Howled of certain change

The move itself was swift and sure
The stroke made with a certain hand
The cut clean and bloodless
Till one looked at the incarnadine brand

We walk, back turned to back
As surely as cheek had turned to cheek
Everything stretched taut to snap
Brisk unreeling of mystique
