We Stand

I was there right next to you
Till it ceased not to not matter
Till the growing up and again
Of the silences beyond the chatter

Till silences began to lose their shape
Softening, ready to meld at their own wake
Till the spaces found their teeth
So we knew what that would take

I stood by you as still as smoke
Holding you when you would not see
Being there for those moments
When the wave was cast in the lee

As did you in my time of doubt
With easy disdain for those that came
You laughed away the void, the cloud
They could see they attacked in vain

Today we stand on the embankments
That we built – like us – to last
And we look at the currents that flow
Along and between but never past.
